The post Still Standing: Janine Wood’s 40 Years at Garage Hair appeared first on DaySmart Salon.

Janine Wood has opened a business during a recession, outlasted a pandemic, and built her way from a commercial lease to a studio that she and her husband own outright. Forty years in the industry will do that. Here’s how she’s built a studio that her community depends on, and what keeps her going.

With so many years in the hair industry, Janine learned what clients need, what a good business requires, and what it takes to keep showing up when the circumstances aren’t ideal. Janine Wood has learned all of it;through two businesses, two economic crises, and forty years of never once considering a different career.

“Everyone Needs a Haircut”

It all started with Oak Street Hair Studio. In 2008, right as the recession hit, Janine decided to open her first salon. Her landlord was skeptical, and he told her he didn’t think it would work out.

Her response was immediate: “Everyone needs a haircut. People will cut things out of their routines, but not a haircut.”

She opened it anyway. And she was right.

Janine ran Oak Street Hair Studio for ten years; building her clientele, earning her reputation, and growing a business that became a fixture in her community. When her lease neared its end, she faced a choice: find another rental and start the cycle again or bet on herself in a bigger way.

Janine and her husband bought their own real estate and gutted a garage. When it was done, she closed Oak Street and opened the studio she’d always envisioned and named it exactly what it was.

In 2019, Garage Hair Studio was born.

Months later, COVID-19 hit, making it the second time Janine had opened a business straight into an economic crisis. The answer was the same as it had been in 2008: keep going.

Not a dream. A vision. There’s a difference, and Janine has now spent over 18 years proving it.

The Currency of Staying Power

Longevity in this industry is earned, not assumed. Janine has it, and she knows what it’s worth.

“The longevity and relationships,” she says, when asked what the last 40 years have given her. “Having a business for 18 years and counting means seeing families grow and being a consistent part of my clients lives while doing what I love.”

This is what happens when you stay put and keep your standards up. Clients who started coming to Janine years ago are still in her chair, and now their kids are too. The trust built over decades isn’t something a newer stylist can replicate, no matter how talented they are.

Running the Business Behind the Chair

Nobody opens a hair studio because they love scheduling software and inventory management. But those things don’t disappear just because you’d rather focus on the cut.

Janine is direct about the tension: “The biggest challenge is balancing the ‘art’ of hair with the ‘business’ of running a studio. Staying current with trends while managing back-end logistics like inventory and scheduling.”

It’s a problem every working stylist owner knows. The client in the chair gets your full attention, but so does everything piling up behind the scenes. The question is how you handle both without letting either slip.

How DaySmart Earned Its Place

For Janine, the answer was getting serious about the tools she uses. She doesn’t dress it up: automated booking changed how her studio operates.

“The automated booking features have been a gamechanger. It streamlines the operation so I can focus on the client in my chair rather than being tied to the phone or a paper book.”

That last part matters. A ringing phone during a service pulls your attention. A paper book means someone has to physically manage it. When the scheduling takes care of itself, the chair gets what it deserves, a stylist who’s fully present.

What Garage Hair Studio Actually Offers

Garage Hair Studio is not trying to be everything to everyone. It’s an intimate, focused environment where clients get one thing in high supply: experience.

“It’s the combination of 40 years of experience with a personalized, intimate studio setting,” Janine says. “Clients know they are getting seasoned expertise in a focused environment.”

Forty years means Janine has handled every hair type, every texture, every request, and every client personality you can imagine. She’s seen what works and what doesn’t. That’s not a credential on a wall; it’s practical, accumulated knowledge that shows up in the quality of every appointment.

Consistency Over Novelty

Ask Janine what’s in her kit, and she’ll tell you without hesitation: professional-grade Oster detachable blade clippers, high-performance scissors, quality finishing products. The same things she’s trusted for years.

“Consistency in tools leads to consistency in results.”

It’s a philosophy that extends past the clippers. The software she uses, the way she runs her schedule, the standards she holds herself to, all of it operates on the same principle. When your tools are reliable, your work is reliable.

Staying Sharp After Four Decades

Forty years in any career can either make you rigid or make you curious. For Janine, it’s clearly the latter.

“There is always a new technique or a new way to solve a problem for a client,” she says, “and that keeps it fresh.”

She doesn’t chase trends for the sake of it, but she watches where the industry moves. A stylist who stops paying attention stops growing, and in a craft where clients come to you with real expectations, standing still isn’t neutral. It goes backward.

What She’d Tell Someone Starting Out

Janine keeps her advice simple, because the simple stuff is what actually holds up over time.

“Consistency is key. Focus on mastering your craft and treating every client with the same high standard of care, regardless of how long you’ve been doing it.”

Protecting the Time Outside the Studio

Running a business for 18 years means Janine has also figured out how to leave it, at least temporarily.

“Setting boundaries and utilizing tools that automate small tasks. When the business side is organized, it’s much easier to step away and recharge.”

When the admin handles itself, the mental overhead shrinks. That’s not a luxury, for someone who’s been at this for four decades; it’s maintenance. You don’t keep doing quality work by grinding without rest.

The Next Decade

Garage Hair Studio is already a community staple. This is the result of 18 years of reliable work and 40 years of knowing how to do it.

Janine isn’t looking to expand or reinvent. She’s looking to keep doing what works.

“To continue providing top-tier service to my community and to keep the studio as a staple of reliability and quality for another decade.”

Straightforward. Grounded. Exactly what you’d expect from someone who’s been at this long enough to know that’s enough.

If you’re ready to spend less time managing the back end and more time on the work you love, DaySmart Salon can help. Start your free 14-day trial today.

Where Skincare Meets Soul: The Story of Club Tú Wellness https://www.daysmart.com/salon/blog/where-skincare-meets-soul-the-story-of-club-tu-wellness/ Thu, 09 Apr 2026 15:36:45 +0000 https://www.daysmart.com/salon/?p=5938 Adriana Vega didn’t set out to open a facial studio. The post Where Skincare Meets Soul: The Story of Club Tú Wellness appeared first on DaySmart Salon.

Adriana Vega didn’t set out to open a facial studio. She set out to understand the skin and the mind behind it. Learn how this solo esthetician is building something intentional, intimate, and entirely her own.

Adriana Vega has always been someone who goes deep.

Whether she’s researching ancient Ayurvedic practices, perfecting a facial protocol, or carefully vetting a new client, Adriana doesn’t do anything halfway. She is the founder of Club Tú Holistic Wellness, a private, appointment-based facial studio where skincare meets sanctuary, and where every detail is curated on purpose.

She’s been operating for a little over a year. And she’s just getting started.

Skin, Science, and a Different Kind of Calling

Adriana’s original plan was medicine. She wanted to become a dermatologist with a focus on cognitive science, as the intersection of skin and mind had always fascinated her. But the more she looked at the conventional medical path, the less it felt like hers.

“I realized I don’t agree with our current medical system and didn’t want to waste time on something that causes me more anxiety than happiness,” she says.

So, she redirected. She kept her love of skin, kept her obsession with the mind-body connection, and channeled both into esthetics. Today, she’s also pursuing certification as an Ayurvedic Practitioner, bringing ancient, holistic wisdom directly into her treatment room.

It shows.

Built on Her Own Terms

Entrepreneurship isn’t new to Adriana. Both of her parents run their own businesses, and she grew up watching them model what it looks like to bet on yourself.

“My parents taught me that working under someone isn’t necessarily bad, but what are the chances of having a boss who aligns with your ideals and goals?”

She already knew the answer. So, when the time came, she built Club Tú Wellness from scratch. Her vision, her standards, her pace.

“I’ve always known I wanted Club Tú. I’m striving to create the vision in my head.”

The Part Nobody Prepares You For

Ask Adriana what she wishes someone had told her before she started, and she doesn’t hesitate: the administrative side of running a business is its own skill set, and esthetics school barely scratches the surface.

“I’m grateful I have some background in business and a family that’s highly business-oriented,” she says. “But that doesn’t make the transition from wanting to have fun with facials to being in big-boss mode any easier.”

It’s an honest reality for a lot of new solo operators. The work you love and the work of running a business are two very different things.

Showing Up Online (Even When It Doesn’t Come Naturally)

Adriana will be the first to tell you: social media is not her comfort zone.

“I’m not into social media like that at all. Not being consistent with my content, that’s the hurdle I’m still working on.”

But she’s actively working on it. She’s planning to collaborate with influencers and social media managers to build her presence more intentionally, reels for new clients, and a newsletter-style approach for her existing community. Recently, something serendipitous happened that gave her a real glimpse of what authentic content could look like.

She sat next to a creative professional on a train. He loved her business concept, came to her space, and wanted to tell her story. His husband modeled. They did facials. They had a content day, and Adriana loved every second of it.

That’s the kind of storytelling she’s leaning into. Follow along at @ClubTuWellness on Instagram.

A Genuine, Borderline Obsessive Love for the Work

When asked what she loves about the industry, Adriana’s answer is simple: everything.

She reads about treatments she’ll never offer, dives deep into topics just because they interest her, and genuinely cannot help but learn more.

“Sometimes I give myself informational comas from deep diving into a topic, then I need a break to process what I just learned.”

That depth of curiosity is part of what makes her so effective, and why her clients trust her.

The Support System Behind the Dream

Adriana doesn’t do this alone. She has a support system she describes as “wonderfully structured” including family, close friends, and the community she’s built around her studio. People who genuinely root for her.

And then there’s her secret weapon.

“My strive for perfection and passion for wellness are part of it, but the real answer is I have the best bookkeeper and financial analyst ever: my mother.”

A Sanctuary, Not Just a Studio

Club Tú Wellness isn’t for everyone, and that’s by design.

Adriana’s studio is private, appointment-based, and highly curated. She’s intentional about her clientele, because she knows the energy people bring into a space shapes the experience for everyone inside it. She describes the vibe as a “home away from home” a sanctuary for peace and rejuvenation where clients aren’t rushed, aren’t treated like numbers, and leave feeling genuinely cared for.

“It’s not just about their skin. It goes beyond that.”

Her long-term vision is to finish her master’s degree, build a solid client base, get her finances in order, and then make a full move into her own dedicated space without cutting corners to get there.

Her Advice to New Estheticians

For anyone just stepping into the industry, Adriana’s guidance is clear and comes from experience:

How DaySmart Salon Fits into the Picture

Adriana found DaySmart Salon the way a lot of good things happen, with a little research, a little help, and the right fit at the right time.

Her dad’s wife helped her compare booking software options. A quick search surfaced a few platforms, and DaySmart immediately caught her attention.

She tried the free trial. Her sales rep walked her through the options and helped her find the package that made the most sense for a solo esthetician running a small, boutique operation.

She’s been using it ever since.

“I love that it’s a very wide-spectrum software that has a platform for all kinds of services. I love the layout and think it’s easy to navigate.” But the feature that really sealed it? Text messaging.

As a solo provider without a separate business line, being able to reach clients directly through the platform has been a game changer for how she communicates and connects.

For a business built on private, personal experiences, having software that keeps everything organized and professional in the background means Adriana can stay focused on what she does best: creating a space where clients feel truly seen.

How a Client-First Experience Built Cleopatra’s Secret https://www.daysmart.com/salon/blog/how-a-client-first-experience-helped-build-cleopatras-secret/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 21:04:13 +0000 https://www.daysmart.com/salon/?p=5475 Learn how Camille Clifford turned her unique personality into her business superpower.

Cleopatra’s Secret is a permanent makeup studio where expert results, genuine connections, and a client-first experience turn appointments into lasting relationships. Learn how owner Camille Clifford turned her unique personality into her business superpower.

If there’s something Camille Clifford knows how to do well, it’s staying busy and turning passion into purpose.

Camille is the owner of Cleopatra’s Secret, a welcoming, feel-good permanent makeup studio in Idaho Falls, where clients come for treatments and stay for the friendship.

Her journey into the industry was far from traditional, and that’s what makes it so inspiring.

Turning Personality Into a Business Superpower

Camille Clifford's business superpower is her personality

Camille has been in the permanent makeup world for 23 years. After getting remarried years ago, she was unexpectedly fired for being too personable. Instead of dimming her light, she leaned into it, unaware that it would become her business superpower.

One day, a friend casually mentioned she’d be great at tattooing eyebrows. That small comment changed everything.

She went back to school, found her niche, and quickly realized her biggest competition… was herself! Camille became known for being fast, incredibly skilled, and deeply passionate about permanent makeup.

“I was meant to be busy,” she says. And she means it.

A Business Built on Passion

Legally licensed as an esthetician for 17 years, Camille does everything except hair and nails. As a mom of five (and now a grandma!), her life has always revolved around kids, sports, and travel.

When her son graduated, she suddenly found herself with extra time on her hands. She decided to pour that energy straight back into her business.

Lessons Learned the Hard Way

Camille Clifford strives to provide a client-first experience every time

What started as busy work quickly became her sanctuary. But looking back, Camille wishes she had known more about the business side from the beginning.

“I wish I had gone to business school,” she shares. Pricing, operations, and backend systems can get confusing, especially when you’re trying to manage everything on your own. After navigating COVID and essentially restarting, she’s learned just how important it is to understand how your business really works behind the scenes.

Growing Confidence and Finding Herself

One of Camille’s biggest challenges? Putting herself out there.

As outspoken as she is, learning to confidently present herself as “the product” took time. Advocating for her work, promoting her services, and getting comfortable talking to people didn’t come overnight. But with practice and perseverance, her upbeat personality began to shine through and actually became her business superpower.

Today, her clients feel instantly at ease. Not only do they leave with amazing results; many of them feel like they’ve made a new best friend.

Providing a Fun, Positive, Client-First Experience

What makes Cleopatra’s Secret different is the unique client-first experience. Camille has created a studio that’s fun, positive, and never pushy. It’s one where real relationships come first. Clients feel instantly comfortable, supported, and genuinely cared for from the moment they walk in.

The friendships Camille has built over the years are what she loves most about the industry, and it’s something clients can truly feel every time they visit.

Cleopatra's Secret has won multiple awards

Reliable Salon Software as a Support

Single-handedly running a salon and treating multiple clients every day is tough. Camille was looking for a solution to help manage her business, send reminders, and stay on top of paperwork, when an old stylist recommended DaySmart Salon. She loves the versatility it offers, and is a big fan of client communications, such as reminders, emails, and text messaging.

The Power of Authenticity: How KUSH Keeps It Real https://www.daysmart.com/salon/blog/the-power-of-authenticity-how-kush-keeps-it-real/ Mon, 24 Nov 2025 15:51:43 +0000 https://www.daysmart.com/salon/?p=5351 Learn how Jenna Morehouse built a thriving salon and client relationships that last.

The post The Power of Authenticity: How KUSH Keeps It Real appeared first on DaySmart Salon.

Our latest customer story features Jenna Morehouse, solo stylist and owner of KUSH Hair Salon in Davenport, Iowa, and is one of determination, being true to yourself, and building client relationships that last. Read on to learn how Jenna built a thriving salon and secured success, single-handedly.

Every stylist remembers the moment they fell in love with the industry. For Jenna Morehouse, owner of KUSH Hair Studio in Davenport, Iowa, that moment came before she ever realized it was her calling.

“I went to cosmetology school before starting college,” she says. “I wanted to be a talk show host, lol. I figured it’d be a solid job while I worked toward a degree. Something flexible, useful, and adult enough to keep me out of trouble.”

But once she got behind the chair, she knew she wasn’t going anywhere. “I loved how fast it moved, how personal it was, how satisfying it felt to make someone look sharp and feel better,” she says. “Turns out, it wasn’t just a side job. It was meant to be.”

Owning Her Space

Salon owner and solo stylist Jenna Morehouse cuts hair and hugs her dog at KUSH Hair Salon in Davenport, Iowa

Jenna eventually decided to build something entirely her own. “I opened KUSH Hair Studio because I wanted a space that reflected my standards, not someone else’s branding.”

More than ten years later, she’s still thriving as a solo stylist. “I’m not interested in chasing trends or building a team. I’m here to do excellent work, protect my peace, and serve my clients with consistency,” she says.

And if her clients have anything to say about it, KUSH Hair Studio is “Highly Recommended!”

Lessons From the Chair

For Jenna, growth didn’t happen overnight. “Building a clientele takes years,” she explains. “And just when you think you’re full, you realize you’re not.”

With 80% of her clients being men, her schedule stays packed. “Someone else might do a few color-and-cut combos and call it a day, while I can have ten or more appointments. It’s fast, focused, and stacked.”

Strength Through Sobriety

Successful salon owner and solo stylist Jenna Morehouse sits on a bright red bench in a park wearing a black hat and red top

The biggest turning point in Jenna’s story came when she got sober. “Before that, I was surviving: showing up, doing the work, but running on fumes,” she shares. “Once I got clear, everything sharpened—my standards, my boundaries, my business. Nearly six years in, sobriety isn’t just part of my story. It’s the reason I’m still standing.”

Her honesty, both with herself and her clients, is what makes her chair such a safe and grounded space.

Connection Over Perfection

Most of Jenna’s clientele are men, and those relationships run deep. “For a lot of them, I’m the longest female relationship they’ve ever had,” she says. “We’ve been through breakups, job changes, kids, moves—you name it. There’s something solid about that kind of trust.”

It’s not glamorous or scripted. It’s real.

“My clients are the reason I’m still here. They showed up when I had nothing but a chair and a plan. They’ve seen me through sobriety, relocation, and many more obstacles. They never flinched. That kind of loyalty isn’t something you market. It’s something you earn.”

A Salon Like No Other

If you ask Jenna what makes KUSH Hair Studio stand out, she sums it up in three words: “It’s a vibe.”

“My clients don’t come back because I’m on time, because I’m not,” she laughs. “They don’t come back because I’m organized, because I’m not. They come back for the vibe, for the honesty, for the space where they don’t have to perform. When they sit in my chair, they get to be whoever they actually are. And I meet them there.”

Simple Tools, Smooth Flow

KUSH Hair Salon in Davenport Iowa is a leafy, fresh, bright and authentic haven

Running a one-person studio means Jenna needs tools that support her, not slow her down. “I don’t need a system that does everything. I need one that does the right things well. DaySmart keeps my schedule clean, my client info tight, and my operations smooth. It doesn’t get in my way. It just works.”

With that kind of behind-the-scenes support, Jenna can focus on what she does best—serving clients with authenticity, consistency, and a little edge.

4 Non-Negotiables from 30 Years Behind the Chair https://www.daysmart.com/salon/blog/4-non-negotiable-lessons-from-30-years-behind-the-chair/ Wed, 30 Jul 2025 13:23:31 +0000 https://www.daysmart.com/salon/?p=4918 Eden Organics co-owners Pamela and Gino Benson talk growth, burnout, and business.

The post 4 Non-Negotiables from 30 Years Behind the Chair appeared first on DaySmart Salon.

]]>

Our latest customer story features Eden Organics and is sure to inspire salon owners everywhere! Read on as we join Pamela and Gino behind the chair to learn the secrets of their 30+ years’ success in hairdressing and salon management.

Would you be surprised to learn that the average salon lifespan is just 3 to 5 years? Even so, Eden Organics has been thriving in the heart of San Diego for more than three decades. Impressive! But what’s even more impressive is it’s still going strong.

So, what’s the secret? Co-owners Pamela and Gino Benson‘s story isn’t just inspiring—it’s full of real lessons for other salon owners navigating growth, burnout, and the business of beauty. Here, they share the 4 biggest lessons they’ve learned during their successful 30+ year career in the industry.

Lesson #1: A thriving salon starts with a balanced partnership

Gino and Pamela Benson - cofounders of Eden Organics

Pamela has always had the heart of a stylist—cutting hair for friends in high school, chasing the joy of making people feel seen and beautiful—while Gino, born in Italy, brings bold vision and leadership.

Together, they have built a business where creativity and strategy work hand-in-hand. As Pamela says: “He’s the big-picture guy. I’m the one behind the chair. And it works because we respect each other’s strengths.”

Lesson #2: Grow with intention, not just ambition

Behind the chair - Gino Benson of Eden Organics

Caught up in the hustle, at one point Eden Organics began to expand fast—too fast. When the 2008 recession hit, they felt the impact deeply. “We were so zealous about growing that we didn’t think about the risks,” Pamela admits.

It was a harsh wakeup call that reminded them of the importance of staying grounded. It’s about partnership, smart decisions, and staying rooted in community—even when the industry changes, and the economy throws curveballs.

As Pamela notes, “Our clients are the wind in our sails. We learned how to grow in a way that still feels personal.” They reassessed and refocused on quality, sustainability, and doing more with less—without sacrificing client experience.

Lesson #3: Use tools that give you time back—not take more of it

For a successful 30 years behind the chair, invest in salon software that helps you maintain a healthy worklife balance

Managing appointments, payments, marketing, and inventory manually? Pamela and Gino have been there, and know all too well how much time running a salon business takes up. Time you could be spending looking after clients and building lasting connections.

That’s why they turned to DaySmart Salon—a system designed specifically for salon owners. “With DaySmart, everything’s in one place. We’re more organized, and we get to focus on our clients—not chasing paperwork.” It streamlined their operations and gave them something every salon owner needs: clarity and breathing room

Lesson #4: Clients are more than appointments—they’re your community

For a successful 30 years behind the chair, look after your customers and they'll look after you

Eden Organics isn’t just a thriving salon. It’s a place where connections are made. In fact, quite literally in Pamela and Gino’s case—over the years, they have matched clients who got married and started families! Others have helped them through life’s tough moments, offering financial, legal, and personal advice along the way.

“You grow up together,” Pamela says. “Clients go through life with you. And you learn just by listening.”

Why Eden Organics’ Story Matters

Eden Organic’s success story is so important because it proves you can grow a profitable, people-first salon—without burning out or losing your way

Pamela and Gino have weathered economic downturns, industry shifts, and rapid growth. They’ve learned how to pivot, how to lean on the right tools like DaySmart Salon, and how to turn clients into lifelong supporters.

For any salon owner wondering how to build something sustainable, meaningful, and that can still feel fun even after decades behind the chair—this is your blueprint. Not just to stay in business—but to love your salon for the long haul.

If you’d like to learn more about Eden Organics, you can visit their website or follow them on Facebook.

If you’re dreaming of creating your own thriving salon—or are looking to work smarter, not harder—DaySmart Salon can help. It has everything you need to manage bookings, track payments, and stay organized without the chaos. Start your 14-day trial free trial today and see for yourself!

How Tony Barnes Built a One-of-a-Kind Boutique Salon https://www.daysmart.com/salon/blog/how-tony-barnes-built-a-one-of-a-kind-boutique-salon/ Fri, 27 Jun 2025 10:44:58 +0000 https://www.daysmart.com/salon/?p=4612 How passion became a successful business model offering wellness and luxury.

The post How Tony Barnes Built a One-of-a-Kind Boutique Salon appeared first on DaySmart Salon.

]]>

Tony Barnes’ journey to becoming a salon owner has not been an easy one. Read on to learn how he transformed his passion into a successful business model that offers wellness and luxury to exclusive clients.

You know how some people just know what they’re meant to do? That’s Tony Barnes. His talent for hairdressing was clear from a very young age, when he started doing hair at just six years old (yes, six!).

Growing up in a house with nine siblings, Tony’s hands were always busy. Whether he was doing his sister’s highlights in middle school or styling her friends’ hair for cash in high school, he wasn’t just playing around. He was building a future.

But his journey wasn’t exactly smooth. At 16, he was kicked out of his home for being true to himself. With a dream in his heart and little else in his pockets, he got on a Greyhound bus and started building his life, one haircut at a time.

The First Salon and a Hard Reset

Fast forward a few years, and Tony had done what many dream of; he opened his first salon. It had ten employees, great visibility, and all the makings of success on the outside. But inside? He was running on empty.

Burnout crept in. The pandemic didn’t help either. Loans piled up, stress took over, and it became clear something had to change. So, he hit reset.

“I built a business but forgot how to breathe. It took losing everything to remember what success really means. It’s not about how big you grow; it’s about who holds you up when the world tries to shut you down.”

Tony Barnes' journey from a kid with a dream to a successful salon entrepreneur

Boundaries, Balance, and Business Smarts

Tony sold his first salon and started fresh, with a vision that put wellness, intention, and luxury at the center. That’s how Jayden Grey Salon was born: an exclusive, boutique, four-chair salon in La Jolla, California, that feels more like a peaceful, pampering retreat than a typical hair appointment.

One of the biggest learning curves for Tony to get to where he is today was setting boundaries. “I wish I knew how to do that sooner,” he says. “I used to give everything until I had nothing left. Now I protect my energy and that changed everything.”

That clarity didn’t just improve his personal life—it transformed his business, too. With a smaller team and tighter focus, he can offer clients a more curated, elevated experience. “This space isn’t just a salon: it’s where beauty, wellness, and community come alive.”

Relying on DaySmart Salon for the last seven years to manage behind-the-scenes operations like bookings, payments, and reports also made the day-to-day running much easier. “It lets me stay focused on what I love: making people feel beautiful.”

Bold, Bright, and Full of Heart

Tony was very intentional about the salon’s vibe. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring in tons of light, and the space is surrounded by good energy—a Pilates studio next door and a nearby café.

“I didn’t want beige or boring,” Tony laughs. “I wanted something bold. Something that felt like luxury and warmth at the same time.”

And it shows. Every detail—from the sleek interior to the white-glove service and invite-only booking style—reflects Tony’s journey and his passion for making people feel cared for, inside and out.

Real Talk for New Stylists

If you’re just getting started in the salon world, Tony has some solid advice: stay put. “Stick with one place for at least three years. You build your clientele by being consistent. Every move costs you clients.”

And don’t be afraid of the hustle. Tony’s done it all—working at Walgreens from 7 until 3 to make ends meet, then attending beauty school from 5 until 10. “Show up. Do the work. That’s how you build something that lasts.”

More Purpose, More Giving Back

Today, Tony isn’t just running a thriving salon. He’s mentoring, growing, and sharing his story to inspire others. His dream has shifted from surviving to thriving, and helping others do the same.

“To every stylist, every survivor, every underdog—your story isn’t over yet,” he says. “From a Greyhound bus to a glass-walled salon, I’ve lived it. Keep going. The world needs your magic.”

Angelica Cardosa is the proud owner of The Wax Spot by Angelica, a thriving family-owned small business in Houston, Texas. Here, Angelica shares her unique start in the cosmetology industry. She also explains how DaySmart Salon has played a vital role in supporting her business’s growth and success.

At just 23 years old, Angelica took the bold step of opening her own waxing studio. A high school friend’s mother encouraged her after recognizing her gift in cosmetology. Over the years, her dedication has not only propelled her career but also created opportunities for her family members. “I have invested in family members’ school which created the family business we have today!” Angelica proudly shares. “My nieces and sisters work alongside me and one of them is opening their own location in the next few weeks, in Kingwood, TX.”

Angelica’s sisters Christie (left) and Diane (right).

The Wax Spot by Christie will be opening soon in Kingwood, TX!

What sets The Wax Spot apart from its competitors is its commitment to attention to detail. The salon’s excellent front desk service and unique touches work together to elevate the client experience. “We have charging stations for clients’ phones, an art book with colored pencils in our waiting room for kids of all ages to doodle and relax, a world map with colored pins for clients to share where they are from, and more since Houston is the most diverse city in America!” Angelica explains. These thoughtful additions create a welcoming and engaging environment for all clients.

Aside from her natural talent, Angelica chose the cosmetology industry because of the joy she finds in helping others feel beautiful. “What I love most about this industry is helping people feel more beautiful while building rapport. Many of our clients have been coming to our salon since the very beginning, and we have grown together, sharing the ups and downs of life, witnessing weddings and births, sharing so much together they have become family as well!” she shares. This deep connection with her clients is a testament to the personal touch that sets her salon apart.

Angelica has been a loyal user of DaySmart Salon since 2010. “I was inspired to start using it because it was user-friendly with all-inclusive features at a great price!” she recalls. The scheduling calendar and marketing tools have been particularly beneficial to her and her staff for running the business.

According to Angelica, DaySmart Salon has helped The Wax Spot grow and become more efficient. The platform offers a streamlined appointment system and marketing tools that are easy to use. “We create a mass email for a special or a holiday, and like magic…the phone starts ringing and the calendar fills in with appointments!” Angelica notes. DaySmart Salon’s software system has allowed her to focus more on providing excellent service and less on administrative tasks.

Angelica draws on her 17 years of experience and success to advise new cosmetology business owners. “Provide above average excellent service consistently and be patient while building your client base. Repeat customers, building rapport along with an excellent reputation, and word of mouth are everything!” she advises. Her emphasis on exceptional service and patience highlights the core values that have driven her own success.

Angelica Cardosa’s journey with The Wax Spot is a powerful example of how passion, family, and the right tools can lead to a thriving business. Her story is an inspiration to aspiring salon owners and a testament to the impact of DaySmart Salon in helping businesses achieve their full potential. Angela Lancina, the owner of Sakora Salon, has cracked the code to success. Questions like: what it takes to keep her salon business moving forward? Or what she values most about owning a business while working behind the chair. Now, let’s take a closer look at how her salon went from being Michigan’s best-kept secret in the downriver area to outgrowing their space in under 3 years.

The Sakora salon was opened in July of 2004 in Brownstown, MI. With their rapid success, they found a new location to support their business. After a 3-month build-out and many nights of working at both locations, Angela opened a 3,200 sq. foot stand-alone space. Best of all it offered plenty of visibility and foot traffic.

Angela decided to name her salon Sakora, which is derived from the Japanese word Sakura, meaning cherry blossom, the state tree of Michigan. This meaning is significant, as it directly complements the natural products they support as an Aveda Concept salon. They offer a wide variety of services, from hair color, hair cutting, extensions, facial services, massage, nails, and much more. Clients will find repurposed materials (front desk, retail shelving, waiting chairs) within the salon that complement the Aveda mission.

The fast-paced and constantly changing environment is the reason why Angela fell in love with the salon industry. Although the day-to-day life of a salon owner can be busy and unique, she is sure to have fun with her staff. Every day can pose a new challenge or struggle which is why she values DaySmart Salon Software to help make her day easier.

“DaySmart Salon software has helped make things a little bit easier daily, especially with the app,” says Angela. “The ability to book an appointment from anywhere takes the pressure off the front desk, and we can make our appointments on the go.”

Online booking is not the only feature that helped Angela elevate and streamline her business. With other programs, her business found challenges with the reports, inventory, and consistency. With the Salon Management feature, Angela can generate the reports she needs to track her business accurately. She can even manage individual goal tracking, which helps her staff increase their viability.

Sakora Salons other favorite features include:

  • 💬 Contacting clients
  • 🗓 Booking appointments
  • 🗂 Recording client data

“DaySmart Salon impacts our day profoundly. Without it, we’re dead in the water because it directs how the day will flow.”

Angela made it a priority to encourage and prioritize education for herself and her employees. Embracing education has helped their salon evolve and stay ahead of trends. Aveda offers online education, and her team also tries to go to a show every year or two or host in-salons classes.

On top of in-salon training, they offer assistant programs, allowing stylists to work their way up as apprentices. That way, the stylist is prepared to handle clients before they go onto the floor and offer salon services. Education has made an impact on the longevity of her staff.

Sakora Salon is continuing to grow every single day. With the help of DaySmart Salon, Angela can count on her software to help her spend less time on daily tasks and more time doing what she loves.

The salon industry offers various options to manage and operate, whether booth rent, commission-based or hourly; some salon owners have chosen to take on all of the above.

That is why we share the success story of Dan Buccilli, owner of Refinery Hair Co. in Flint, MI. Dan defined success through a hybrid salon business model that allows his team to either choose to be booth renters or commission-based employees. This concept and other smart business decisions have helped his business grow and thrive from a team of 14 to 32.

The Refinery Hair Co. opened its doors 3 ½ years ago when Dan decided he wanted to open a space where clients could come in, feel excited to be there, and that they’d leave extremely happy and look forward to coming back. The downtown Flint location was ideal because, while living there for a few years, he had realized what a great community it was and how much was going on while the city was going through an incredible revitalization stage. Bringing a new salon business to the area just made sense. However, it was slightly scary at first due to the stigma of the Flint water crisis. But he took a leap of faith, and it turned out great!

The Refinery Hair Co. is a full-service salon that offers an inviting atmosphere through modern design and an eclectic appeal.

With white base tones and a pop of red, you want to hang out in this joyful space that offers many hair and spa services, from coloring, and extensions, to bridal services, body waxing, massage, lashes, and much more. All while allowing staff to manage their own business as a booth renter or operate based on commission. While Dan oversees the operations of the company along with his management team, he also works behind the chair 35 to 40 hours per week which allows him to interact with his staff regularly, work with his team on the same level, and treat everyone equally. Doing this has helped maintain morale, increase motivation, and avoid turnover.

One of Dan’s biggest rewards is seeing staff grow and thrive to their fullest potential.

Keeping staff happy and ensuring they know they are valued is a crucial goal that he continues to maintain through planning retail contests, catering in meals, and offering advanced education. Most education they offer is coordinated through their retail brand partners. Dan will partner with high-end product lines that offer in-house education based on retail sales volume. His team excels at selling retail and in return often receives complimentary education. It is a win for everyone!

Even thriving salon business owners tend to face challenges. One of the biggest challenges for Dan was the burnout of working behind the chair and managing the whole business. He quickly learned the importance of delegating tasks to other team members, created a reliable management team, and could find the work-life balance he needed. This leads to the most significant advice Dan can offer to up-and-coming salon owners, “Really try hard to find work-life balance because you’ll be working a lot when you first open, and there’s going to be a lot that’s not going to go right in the beginning. Don’t get discouraged and take time for yourself because if you don’t, you will start to get burnt out.”

Not only has it been beneficial to delegate tasks to his team to save on burnout and maintain work-life balance, but finding the right scheduling solution has also played a key role.

Dan had worked with many other software solutions and did a lot of research before opening his salon and finding the right software that fit the hybrid business model. While researching solutions he decided that, “DaySmart definitely would have been the best fit for my business. It just seemed like the full package to everything we were looking for, especially being a hybrid salon. That’s why I ultimately chose DaySmart Salon.” He expressed how easy it was to use and it offered the ability to view many different reports that have helped him grow his business.

By projecting sales and bookings through the software and having the ability to calculate payroll, the software became such a great tool in managing the work-life balance he needed. He also allows his staff to use their own DaySmart Salon mobile app to access their reports and marketing features to continue building their business by sending targeted marketing campaigns right to their own customers. They can even take payments from within the app and quickly reschedule appointments either at their chair or escort guests to the front desk for check-out. The solution meets the needs of everyone on their team no matter if they are booth-rent or commission.

Dan and his business’s future goal would be to continue focusing on his staff and growing their business. He may eventually add additional service offerings in the lower level of their facility but for now, it is essential to keep thriving while looking forward to the future.
